Once again, Tamiya delights us with the flawless
engineering quality of their scale model, the Mercedes-AMG GT3, which was
launched in 2017... or was it? In this tutorial, we will explore the pros and
cons of this remarkable replica of the Mercedes-Benz vehicle, created in
collaboration with their performance brand, AMG, for various FIA GT3
championships. Customizing it for the 2019 GT World Challenge
America Crowdstrike team.
The kit
Back in 2017, Tamiya launched this great kit of the
Mercedes-AMG GT3. It’s a curbside model, meaning that neither the engine
is detailed nor the doors are workable. The only access to the interiors
is the view through the transparent parts. |

Thus, we have a perfect opportunity to do as best as we can
with the body so it’s as eye-catching as it can be.
There’s not much content in the box. We have the instructions
manual, three sprues with mechanical and body parts, a small chrome parts sprue
and the usual clear parts sprue.
With 132 parts, it is neither a very extensive model nor a
concise one, which will ensure countless hours of entertainment.
At a first glance, there is no flashing, as usual with this
manufacturer, but we must pay attention with the mold lines anyway, as that’s
inevitable in the manufacturing process.
Construction
Customizing the Tamiya kit
Tamiya has launched, as some other civil model vehicles
manufacturers, some competition models that the different car manufacturers have
for sale for clients who want to be part of any of the championships held by the
FIA (Federation Internationale de l'Automobile). In this case, this Mercedes-AMG
GT3 is manufactured to be part of the different GT3 championships worldwide.
These manufacturers are starting to sell these kits with
generic liveries. Those liveries usually are the ones the car manufacturers
present their vehicles to their customers with. Sometimes, they are used as a
base for the liveries for certain teams, but others just make their own designs,
from the ground up, which result in really attractive cars.
Therefore, out of all the appealing designs available, the
chosen livery for our model is the #04 design from Team Crowdstrike in the 2019
GT World Challenge America. This particular design is colourful and
eye-catching, presenting several challenges that will be addressed in this
tutorial.
There are numerous aftermarket manufacturers that produce and
sell decal sets featuring various liveries from different teams and races across
multiple championships. Unfortunately, there isn't a manufacturer that offers
the specific livery you've chosen. In such cases, the only option is to create
our own custom decal set for the model.
