To see or not to see...
By Mario Covalski
Until 1997, I had never worn eyeglasses, my vision was almost perfect and being a teenager, I was very proud of it. After my four-0 birthday, I had to face a common problem people over 40 suffer. It's called "presbyopia". The crystalline lens is less able to focus on close objects.
Be sure that is not the same to read wearing "reading " glasses than to read without them. Besides eyes turn idler and you will be needing them more and more.
At first, some tasks called for magnifying reading glasses, specially when speaking about small close details, later an alarming number of jobs called for other ones, so that prescription had to be updated, and nowadays, I'm not able to do any job that requires to see at more than 50cm (a very short distance), without glasses.
So; I began to experience frustration. There was nothing more valuable than a young vision, and after spending time looking for the right spectacles, my ophthalmologist recommended me some kind of magnifier.
After almost 40 years of building, details had become a nightmare "blurred things". It was not only enough to use the proper tool, skill or talent....something more was needed.
Becoming accustomed to the magnifier, I discovered a new world of details...and perfection.
Now, I could paint a tiny bolt with an incredible precision and it looked excellent although being appreciated without a magnifier.
As I said before, about becoming accustomed to the magnifier, all you need is mental training because the movement you see of 1cm is in fact of 1mm and on of 1mm is really 0,1 mm, you need a different sensitivity on your hand, but once you reach that point, the result will be great.
The advantages of using a magnifier are obvious, furthermore if you have to detail for example cockpits of airplanes or so, but not only does it help you to increase painting accuracy but also to do other jobs as removing the remainders from the tree using a cutter; the result is so perfect that I almost don't need the use of sandpaper.
The main disadvantage resides in the fact that once you become accustomed..... everything will seem to be distant and you'll have to learn to live with it, however, at this point, I decided that this is something natural.
If you wish a high level of perfection only by using your sight, you should work at a high
level of accuracy. I noticed this when I took approach with my digital camera, many mistakes would have been easily corrected with the help of a magnifier, when the work was made.
In this point, you may be thinking you are happy with your eyes that's to say, what they "offer" to you is fairly enough, but the basic idea is to achieve the work with more precision to get an excellent result with the normal precision of the vision. It's a well known concept used in mechanic.
I advice to get a balanced magnifier lamp with incandescent bulb and X10 magnification. Sit down in a comfortable and relaxed position to work, noting if you feel cervical pain or so.
This editorial doesn't aim at transmitting the idea that you must achieve a perfect work, it only tries to help you about the easier way of being sure that you see..... what we really want to see, and to get the best results using our tools and "eyes", ..... the best and irreplaceable part of our equipment.
