The aim of this article is to share with the reader the work accomplished some years ago to build a model of a Russian tank KV-220 of the WWII. The modeler psyche is at times, curious, being so many kits available, some day we say “this is the model I want to have!” either because we saw pictures or read something about it in a book, a message in a forum... etc. No matter how, the only way to have it, is to get down to work, and I did so.
For my project, I started from two Trumperter kits, the FV-1 and KV-2. The differences between both are a bigger turret and longer hulls with one more wheel. Besides, to build the KV-220, I would have to re-arrange the axles, since the separation between both is not the same than in the others KV.
In the following image you may appreciate the difference in size between the KV-220 and a normal KV-1.
I used what I had to hand, but if you are going to build a KV-220, I recommend you to use two KV-2 kits, since they include the type of wheels we need. Obviously, having a diagram of the vehicle, it’s a must- have.
Construction
Lower hull
First step of the conversion was to cut the hull in two halves in order to enlarge it.
This work of lengthening is relatively simple since the kit has an interior hull and two sides that have to be glued over it.
