How much detailing do you want for your models?
By Mario Covalski
In the past editorial, I spoke about modelling as a creative process, explaining then, my way of thinking. Now I want to come back with a new reflection, about what superdetailing represents for me, and about the pressure it means to modelers.
I want to emphasize that I understand that it's not the same superdetail an aircraft model, car, armor...etc, and of course, scale is also an important fact, so I'll concentrate on cars subjects, that is what I best know about.
Once I heard a short story about a modeler....Obsessed with the idea of constructing a perfect race car model, he decided to search for the best references during some years, visited museums taking thousand of photos and bought all kind of books he could get.
He bought the most expensive kit, and spent much money in superdetailing sets, he also asked artisans to scratchbuild high quality metal an resin parts.....and one day after many years, work and money spent, he got the desired model.
The story tells that he was called from a museum and offered him to buy the real car, for not so much money, he rushed to buy it at once, he took it to his garage....and then he became depressed.
One morning after some weeks, he got up, and taking his tool box, went to the garage and began to work with happiness on the real car......when his astonished wife asked him what he was doing, he replied, I'm.......detailing it.
From my point of view, the moral of this story is, that it doesn't matter either the result or the objective but your own work itself.
I remember my childhood, when anybody of us was so happy just by building a kit from Aurora that cost no more than 30 cents.
Don't get excited for the lights of technology, happiness in modeling should house in us and under no circumstances in the money we can spend in superdetails, otherwise wealth would mean the best details sets and .....more happiness; you know that it's not true.
This hobby is supposed to be a fun. Let's keep in that way and make scale modeling a truly fascinating past time.
To improve a kit does not mean changing a good Tamiya part for a metal one, on the contrary it means to give free rein to our imagination, we don't want our models finished as if they were coming from an assembly line
Nowadays, the great challenge in modeling, is to avoid that the excessive technology, and avarice, dehumanize our activity, which is to bring to life a dream that resides in our minds, giving a little of our own essence to a small piece of plastic.
So, haul out your imagination, and ....... Let's HAVE FUN !!!!!!!!!.
