The short life of a model
By Mario Covalski
Is there anything more wonderful than a shrink- wrapped kit in box?. I sincerely believe that anybody who has built scale models some time in his/her life, will agree with me, that no, there is nothing more exciting and captivating. The thing is that the box content, has quite a special power on us, the power of dreams, probably, everything we wished to accomplish in modeling (and why not, in life)…and it remains there hidden, but with the hope that our libido will not be unsatisfied.
Have you ever wondered which is the life of a model in these terms? I mean how long will a model make us feel this powerful excitement?, so powerful, that inwardly, is capable of changing our mood…
This is something serious considering that most of the modelers are adults, it’s such the power that a simple box exerts on a vast majority of the mankind….
But this influence will be living a borrowed time for each of our boxes, and will depend on what we make with it, in other words, we’ll decide its fate.
From the moment of purchasing, it becomes part of our lives, spending much of our spare time, after the work and the family. We promise to each other a future full of incredible successes… not always fulfilled.
Next step might be opening it, to start examining its content anxiously…or simply heaping it up and the obscurity, it’s the birth of a new model, and as in real life, sometimes painful…or nothing.
How many disappointments we’ve had when discovering that the interior was not full of dreams but of plastic, sometimes of doubtful quality, but like a kid’s parents, we swear to give and get the best we can from it.
The construction is a serious thing, let’s say the youth of the boxes, we like parents, are leading it smoothly, creating a personality for good or bad, and our mistakes will remain in that model during its whole life.
The lucky boxes that could overcome adolescence’s difficulties, turn like chrysalis, into grown-up models, finished to our enjoyment and satisfaction.. It’s a youthful stage yet, and we spend a lot of time…just watching, like proud parents, the result after so much effort and passion.
Finally, any day, a new box will come to our hands…maybe a new gift or a recent purchase but as nearly always happens, coming from a shelf… after a long rest …forgotten… and waiting there to be rediscovered.
All our attention will be then, devoted to our new box, full of dreams…not very different, but with other color and harmony. And that, will be the life span of the previous model… that once again, will be no more than…… a simple plastic one.
