No matter the subject
By Mario Covalski
Have you been building scale models for a long time?, Did you use to work on the same subjects?, Were you bored on one occasion? Were there times when you’ve not built models even when you had the feeling to do so? If you have a positive answer to most of these questions, this Editorial is to you.
For years, I’ve seen experienced modelers suffering what I call the “well or time out” syndrome. Usually, the one affected is a very experienced fan, who has won contests and has built very good models, and suddenly, he stops building, it’s not a question of time or any other nature.
The one suffering this syndrome, has a great deal of projects in mind, and, as it’s usual to modelers, boxes and boxes, some of them containing started models. His enthusiasm in general has not fallen off and he still goes on watching nostalgic, those projects he wanted to finish, but doesn’t have the willpower to do.
This has happened to me several times during the last 30 years, and I know very well the “symptoms”. Although, this doesn’t mean that all modelers feel the same, when this syndrome attacks, it caused displeasure, since the hobby is to most of us, our safety valve in the modern world.
What to do then, if you’re undergoing a similar situation? .My advice is to change the subjects temporary. If you used to build aircraft, try with armors or even with some civil vehicle, if they were cars, then, try with military vehicles. It doesn’t mind if the quality is not the same, obviously you are an expert in the subjects you use to build, and perhaps you’ll be somewhat lost.
Here, the meaning, is to recover the taste by the unknown, the excitement of finding something we know nothing about. Many modelers build some models “ by heart” without needing instructions, this is great because it shows the knowledge gained along the years, but, on the other hand the hopes and magic of discovering something new evaporate…finally, no matter the subject we build, the point is, in my opinion, to crystallize our creative ability, that should be, in this activity, our priority objective.
