Returning to the sources
By Mario Covalski
In spite of the fact that many years passed since I built my first scale model, I still wonder which is the meaning of building them, even more, what modeling as a whole, means.
Considering this is a recreational activity, that on the other hand, demands time consuming, dedication and effort, it’s obvious that this represents something very important to those who like me, carry it out; otherwise, we would spend our time in something, let’s say, more “light”.
It’s also obvious that everybody feels something different in this respect, since human being is naturally individualist, but there must be several common points so that this activity has developed, with large industries around.
Which are those points, then? I refer to the motivations that encourage somebody interested for instance, in WWII, in car or motorcycle races, or in any other true-life activities, to decide and give expression to that interest by building scale models.
I’m not a specialist, and this editorial doesn’t aim at making a deep analysis of human psyche, however seeing that, there are more adults and less children and teenagers developing this activity, it’s clear that behind so much passion and even obsession, there are subjects which one has to retake, things we wanted to do during life and we didn’t, places we wanted to catch up and was not possible, times we would have wished to live and it has fallen to our lot to live in these ones…well, a great many experiences we recreate through our models.
I think that making models is a way of day-dreaming to escape from daily routine and pressure, proposed by modern societies, we must not forget this, we must not turn modeling into part of that routine or pressures….Modeling must be kept as it was in its origins, a dream, and dreams are far from being perfect.
