Internet today....
By Mario Covalski
I’ve been surfing the Web since about 12 years ago, and during the last 10 ones, I could see several sites devoted to plastic modeling turning up. At first, they were either simple text pages, or forums that no longer exist, and of course, by that time, all those online shops were already set up outside the Internet, and just out of curiosity or by making a lucky guess, they were set up as e-commerce shops.
Nowadays, the Internet is broad regarding the sites devoted to our hobby, forums, own sites, portals, magazines…e-commerce, etc, etc.
This month, I’ve been reflecting on the following: is there any real need to repeat what is already on line? For instance, if we know that a very popular web site has a review of the last Dragon kit, there’s not much sense in repeating the same, we’ll be wasting our time and resources….
Well, this is what most of the people do in any case, each one wants to have his exclusive, his review on the last Tamiya’s kit…etc.
On the other hand SOME forums: encouraging modelers to publish full articles as if they were web sites, when a forum should be basically a way of communication and exchange of opinions and ideas.
This makes me think about the real intentions behind such a lot of competition to attract readers, members…etc, when they say in person, that there’s no profit motive in mind, and when no reward is offered. Perhaps some of you will agree with me, that there’s something fishy going on there.
I sincerely believe that all web sites should be part of a community, working together and united, everyone with own characteristics and aims, of course, but doing their best, giving some space to the neighbour…don’t intending to attract others’ visitors with the same material, quite the opposite, offering a different alternative and please, set the record straight, let the forums be real forums…and if their owners want to face a different project, they can try it, proposing it to the community and working hard on it, like everybody does.
