The twilight zone
By Mario Covalski
Several years ago, someone connected with the plastic modeling industry made me a comment, saying that internet was a twilight zone…and although, in those days, I partly agreed with him, actually, I was not fully convinced about that reality as today, after having been Modeler Site’s editor for five years.
If we admit that technological advances changed mankind, internet pushed out those bastions (say those which played the leading role in that change), the telephone, the car, the airplane, the photography, the cinema…etc.
Nevertheless, and let me state this, Internet is a twilight zone. Many times, somebody surfing the net now and then, has the opportunity to explore about many topics but without realizing what is really behind all that information offered …and there, personal sites, e-shops, forums, portals, etc, etc, all they seem to be like ingredients mixed in a salad that get those surfers terribly confused, and everything is called… “the web page”.
It’s true, that everything began with a group of web pages that shared information between them for free, most of the times it was scientific or technical information. Most of the pages was that, only ONE page, and even at the very best 5 or 10.
This month’s cover note has 66 HTML pages ( language used to build web pages) and 380 pics. It's so large that it would be nearly impossible to publish it in any paper magazine, and here, you’ll be enjoying it divided into three parts since we’ve decided to publish it in three consecutive months.
This is the result of the patience and skill of William Chan, a collaborator of ours. Not only did he build a great model but he also took pictures along every step of construction… impressive!!!.
On the other hand, besides of William’s work; to process the pictures (size, colors…etc) took a whole day, and, the complete article, around 5 days, to be structured in five parts, apart from the 3 or 4 days spent for the translation into Spanish and corrections.
Summing up, those who will accede to read William’s article, will be receiving more than 350-400 hours work…it makes me dizzy just thinking about this.
And all these tasks, are more or less, the same for all articles published in Modeler Site, and we have offered around 1500 along the 5 years we’ve been in existence, and this is the main reason why we assert that Modeler Site is a VIRTUAL MAGAZINE, not a web page…or forum…etc.
Then, going back to what I was saying earlier, internet is a twilight zone…and only you, dear reader, may light your own way.
