There is always this one kind of projects that you ever wanted to build and pops up in your mind once in a while. This was it for me: In my mind I saw a gantry style signal tower in a fighting scene and under which a panther is positioned. This kept me fascinated for a long time, until I finally decided to build it. I always had an inclination for railway scenes; probably back from the days when I played with the model railroad at my grandfather’s house. So, tracks need to be on the diorama, that’s for sure and as well as something track bound.
In this specific article I want to talk about the build of the main protagonist, the Panther II. The tank itself was a supposed the successor of the famous Panther. It was developed in 1943 including the built of a single prototype hull. The project got cancelled in favour of the Panther Ausf. G.
But I liked the idea of the prototype and enhanced this scenario to a fictitious 1946 scene, in which a battered fully functional Panther II is involved. One of the big advantages on working on themes of 1946 vehicles is, that you don’t have to look on any reference and work just straight from your fantasy.
Unfortunately the Panther II hasn’t really made a big breakthrough on the available model market, so I had to take the old Dragon 6027which was produced in 1994. I found a relatively non expensive on eBay and ordered a bunch of additional aftermarket products to compensate the lack of quality.
For the painting process I decided going for 120% worn effect of a battered tank. Especially in a fictitious 1946 all ways are open, so why not? I like the interaction of factory build components with improvised battlefield additions that the crew added later on. The supplies as well as the personal belongings of the tank crew, are an excellent combination which results in an interesting vehicle to look at. I invite you, to follow me along the route to the final outcome.
